Satpura Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh
Nestled in the lush and rugged landscapes of central India, Satpura Tiger Reserve is one of Madhya Pradesh’s most scenic and biodiverse protected areas. Named after the Satpura mountain range, this reserve offers an extraordinary mix of forests, hills, gorges, and rivers — creating a perfect haven for wildlife and nature lovers alike.
Spanning over 2,100 square kilometers, Satpura Tiger Reserve encompasses Satpura National Park, Bori Wildlife Sanctuary, and Pachmarhi Sanctuary, forming one of the most pristine and undisturbed tiger habitats in the country. The terrain, with its dense sal and teak forests, tranquil Denwa River, and misty Pachmarhi Plateau, supports a rich variety of flora and fauna.
Apart from the Royal Bengal Tiger, Satpura is home to leopards, Indian gaur (bison), sloth bears, wild dogs (dholes), sambar deer, chital (spotted deer), and four-horned antelope (chausingha). The reserve is also known for sightings of giant squirrels, Indian porcupines, and even elusive species like the Indian leopard cat and rusty-spotted cat.
For birdwatchers, Satpura is a true paradise, boasting over 300 species of birds. Among the most notable are the malabar pied hornbill, crested serpent eagle, grey-headed fish eagle, Indian paradise flycatcher, and various species of woodpeckers, kingfishers, and owls. The peaceful backwaters of the Denwa River also attract a variety of waterbirds and migratory species during the winter months.
Best Time To Visit
The best time to visit Satpura Tiger Reserve is from October to April, when the weather is pleasant and wildlife sightings are frequent. The cooler months from November to February are ideal for birdwatching and nature walks, while March to May — the dry summer season — offers better chances to spot tigers, leopards, and sloth bears near water sources. The park remains closed during the monsoon season (June to September) to allow the forest to regenerate and ensure visitor safety.
