Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe
Nestled along the banks of the mighty Zambezi River in northern Zimbabwe, Mana Pools National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s last truly wild safari destinations. Known for its breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and remarkable walking safaris, Mana Pools offers an intimate connection with nature that few places can match.
From open floodplains and riverine forests to ancient baobabs and dramatic escarpments, the park is a haven for wildlife. Expect up-close encounters with elephants, lions, leopards, and large herds of buffalo, alongside an incredible variety of birdlife. Mana is also famous for its relaxed bull elephants, often seen standing on their hind legs to reach the trees -- a sight you won’t forget.
What makes Mana Pools truly special is its freedom of exploration. It’s one of the few parks in Africa where you can experience unguided walking and canoe safaris, immersing yourself in the raw beauty of the African bush. With no fences and minimal development, the park remains a pristine wilderness ideal for those seeking authentic, off-the-beaten-track adventures.
Best Time To Visit
The best time to visit Mana Pools National Park is the dry season, from May to October, when animals congregate near the Zambezi River, making game viewing excellent for activities like walking safaris. The park is lush and vibrant from late November to April, but this is the rainy season, which can limit road access and disperse wildlife, though it brings newborn animals and abundant birdlife.
