Kanha Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh
Kanha National Park, nestled in the Maikal range of the Satpura hills in Madhya Pradesh, lies in the heart of India and forms part of the central Indian highlands. Widely recognized as one of the finest wildlife destinations in the world, Kanha has earned a strong reputation as a premier tiger reserve. The park spans two districts—Mandla and Balaghat—and has a rich conservation history. Originally declared a reserve forest in 1879, it was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1933, and later upgraded to a national park in 1955.
Covering an area of 940 square kilometers, Kanha is set within a stunning landscape of rolling hills, lush meadows, and dense sal and bamboo forests. Including both its core and buffer zones, the Kanha Tiger Reserve extends across a total area of 1,945 square kilometers.
Kanha is a haven for wildlife, from the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger to the endangered Barasingha (swamp deer), as well as numerous species of birds, reptiles, insects, and plant life. The park attracts visitors from around the world with its well-developed tourism infrastructure. One of the most scenic spots in Kanha is Bamni Dadar, also known as Sunset Point, offering panoramic views of the park and breathtaking sunsets.
Best Time To Visit
The best time to visit Kanha Tiger Reserve is generally from October to June, which is when the park is open. For pleasant weather and good wildlife sightings, the winter months of October to February are ideal, offering cool days perfect for safaris. However, for the best chance of spotting tigers, the hotter months of March to May are recommended, as animals congregate around waterholes.
