Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh
Nestled in the Vindhya Hills of eastern Madhya Pradesh, Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve is one of India’s most iconic and biodiverse wildlife sanctuaries. Known for having one of the highest densities of Royal Bengal Tigers in the country, the reserve is a jewel of central India’s wilderness and plays a vital role in the conservation of this majestic predator. The reserve also holds significant cultural and spiritual importance. According to legend, the Bandhavgarh Fort was gifted by Lord Rama to his brother Lakshmana, giving the reserve its name — Bandhav (brother) and garh (fort).
Bandhavgarh’s landscape is characterized by steep ridges, undulating forested terrain, and open meadows. Its centerpiece is the ancient Bandhavgarh Fort, perched on a plateau amidst the forest, lending historical and mythological depth to the area. The habitat comprises mixed deciduous forests dominated by sal and bamboo, interspersed with grasslands and perennial streams — a perfect ecosystem for a wide variety of fauna.
Apart from the Royal Bengal Tiger, Bandhavgarh is home to leopards, sloth bears, Indian bison (gaur), sambar deer, barking deer, and wild boar. The park also shelters a rich birdlife, including crested serpent eagles, Indian rollers, paradise flycatchers, and vultures. With its thriving wildlife population and scenic beauty, Bandhavgarh remains a top destination for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and researchers.
Best Time To Visit
The best time to explore Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve is from October to June, when the park is open to visitors. The cool and pleasant months from November to February are ideal for birdwatching and safari drives. However, if you're aiming for higher chances of tiger sightings, the dry summer months from March to early June are preferred, as animals are more frequently spotted near water sources. The park remains closed during the monsoon season (July to mid-October) due to heavy rainfall and forest rejuvenation.
